Are you currently out of high school? and heading to college or university, maybe you are already a college student who has never lived in a student commune and you are considering it because it is affordable or you believe that it might be a super fun experience for you. well you are most definitely not wrong, however just like every other college accommodation, commune living has its own perks and drawbacks.

Pro: learning to coexist with different people

One of the most adventurous things about living in a commune is that you get to interact with a range of diverse individuals, you get to learn new languages and about different cultures because of the different people that come from different ethnicities. For example, I didn’t know the difference between Tsonga and Shaagaan, you would be surprised to find out how many people don’t know the difference between the two. You grow compassion and you learn to understand that the next person is equally important as you.

Con: little to no privacy

You share almost everything in a commune. The bathrooms and the bedrooms are some of those things, so on an occasion that bring your sweetheart or boo over you need to consult your roommate first. You somehow forget to flush the toilet after taking a dump, AGAIN! Someone in the house will know.

Pro: Finding love

Familiarity with the person you are attracted to brought by spending a lot of time together and living near each other makes it a lot more simple for both people to learn things about one another, It’s a great place to get to know someone. That netflix and chill date is just a few steps away (literally)😉

Con: The FRIDGE!

What is yours is mine and what is mine is yours including the fridge. In many student communes fridges are provided,  1,2 or more in some cases depending on the size of the commune. This is one of the booooh issues👎. People complain that their meat or milk is missing. There can be a mix up of food. Sticking a huge red label on you belongs doesn’t seem to make much of a difference either.

Pro: Assistance with school work

John Maxwell said it best teamwork makes the dream work! One of the great things about living in a student commune is that you get to assist each other with assignments. If you are a first year student and you are living with a second a year or a final year student that did the same course you are doing just ask for pointers. On the off chance that you are writing the same test as some of your housemates, you can ask your housemates to organise a study session so you can assist each other.  Your laptop crashes before you are done typing your big assignment? you can just ask a fellow housemate to borrow you their PC. You couldn’t make it to class for whatever reason? a fellow housemate can brief you on the lecture you missed.

Con: Conflicts

A commune is filled with different indivisuals that have different personalities and separate values, and personalities are bound to clash. Competition between housemates, gossip and judgement lead to conflicts. But remember that conflict is inevitable. It is everywhere, the only thing you can do is try to minimize it.

Choosing a suitable place for you to live during your college or varsity life won’t just affect your varsity experience but it could also influence how well you do academically. I hope these pros and cons of living in a student commune can help you with your decision of choosing a suitable place to live for college become more clear.

Venting about my adoration for The muffinz

Amazon,2020 Ever Since I heard The muffinz singing Umsebenzi we ndoda from my Grandmother’s silver CRT Sony television set one Saturday afternoon, on SABC 3 at that time I was around 12 years old, I didn’t know much about good music, but, what I knew was my ears were certainly sold. The muffinz is a 5-piece male band that was birthed at the University of Johannesburg. They bring a variety of elements to the group comparable to bringing different ingredients to make  muffins, which explains their band name. They make groovy yet soulful music. What I admire about this group is that they don’t fit into one specific genre, their sound has a jazzy, afro soul to it with sprinkles of reggae. They shift effortlessly between these sounds. They are in my opinion the best band to ever come out of South Africa (as the generation Z would put it 'Period!') As I matured over the years, my appetite for good soulful music had overwhelmingly increased, as well as my understanding.
